Your Health: Marigold Therapy
Plantar warts are tough enough to withstand acid, freezing and more. But the foot growths are no match for a treatment made with marigolds!Steven blackwood's foot was the site of a plantar wart war, and his podiatrist was leading the charge. "'I'm going to cut this down with a scalpel, then I'm going to freeze your foot, then I'm going to burn your foot,'" says Steven Blackwood a plantar wart patient. But after six months, one wart sprouted into three. "And they started to get painful, and I was literally walking with a limp. Every time I moved, it kind of hurt a little bit." Steven headed to Temple University's Foot and Ankle Institute, and tried a different tactic: marigolds. "At first they say, 'Marigolds? Are those the yellow flowers in my garden?' And, 'Can I plant those and just rub them on my feet?' So unfortunately, you can't, not these particular species," says Dr. Tracey Vlahovic, a podiatrist at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia.Doctor Tracey Vlahovic is sowing the seeds of change as she brings marigold therapy to the US from England. "There's different species that are anti-viral, which we used for the warts or verruca, as they call it in the United Kingdom." Treatment is straight forward -apply a pad to the affected area, and spray with marigold extract. "A paste is then applied of the marigold, along with a covering, a tape covering and a dressing." (:05)The marigold poultice stays on the foot for a week, and then is checked by the doctor. "It was amazing what I got just from a week, and then the second application, it was just gone," says Blackwood.Though the concoction of flower petals, stems and leaves is natural, it's not weak. "It is gentle, but it shouldn't be looked as, sort of, a lamb, you know. It's not a lion, but it's not a lamb either. It's sort of in the middle," says Dr. Vlahovic.Tested therapies that make the most of flower power. Doctor Vlahovic, who practices in Philadelphia, is the only doctor in the US certified by the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital to use this prescription marigold therapy. Also, while marigold creams are sold in health stores, they are made with the more common marigold variety and are intended as moisturizers.AUDIENCE INQUIRY:For information on Marigold Therapy, http://www.marigoldfootcare.comFor general information about plantar warts:American Academy of Dermatology, http://www.aad.orgAmerican Podiatric Medical Association, http://www.apma.org

PKR.com goes One to One for charity
The One to One PKR.com charity poker tournament took place on Sunday with a host of celebrities including Jamie Oliver, Teddy Sheringham and WSOPE runner-up John Tabatabai. All the proceeds from the event went to the One to One Children's Fund, which helps children in the United Kingdom, Middle East, Africa, Kosovo and India and Indonesia. For this year's fundraiser the One to One Children's Fund returned to London's Sketch restaurant for a night of poker and backgammon. The annual event raised over £200,000 for children in need. The £365 entry fee (which represents the cost of sponsoring one child for a year at £1 per day) included a champagne reception plus the buy-in to either the PKR.com sponsored poker tournament or the Omar Sharif Backgammon Tournament. "It was a fantastic night for everyone involved and good to see so many people contributing towards such an important cause," said marketing manager Erika Schwartz. The poker tournament was eventually won by Leticia White, daughter of famous chef Marco Pierre White. In addition to the trophy, she secured £4,000 for taking down first place, having picked up several celebrity bounties along the way. U.K. April CPI surges to 3% annual rate
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Consumer price inflation in the United Kingdom rose to an annual rate of 3% in April, the Office for National Statistics said Tuesday. The rate is the highest since March 2007. The jump exceeded expectations for a rise to 2.6% from an annual reading of 2.5% in March. Rising gas, electricity and heating oil prices were the biggest contributor to higher prices, but upward pressures were also felt across a range of other categories, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcohol and tobacco, and recreation and culture, the ONS said.
