Sweatin' it out
IF genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, we should be feeling like a pretty smart bunch. The 2.6 million or so sweat glands scattered across our bodies seem to be on high alert this time of year. That's a good thing. Not sweating can be dangerous. On the other hand, too much of a good thing is bad.To make sense of sweating, we turned to Brenda Schewe, director of the internal medicine clinic at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, and Christopher Moeller, a Wichita dermatologist. Why do we sweat? It's our bodies' way of dissipating excess heat. When air passes over the moisture, the evaporation produces a cooling effect.Kansas' humidity is a disadvantage: The cooling effect isn't as great as in a drier climate.
