Lowe holds back tears at son's sentencing hearing
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe says he's proud of his son for taking responsibility for his crimes.WXII-TV reported Tuesday that Lowe held back tears as he testifed at his son's sentencing hearing in Greensboro. Sidney Lowe II pleaded guilty Monday to a dozen charges connected to a March 2007 home invasion, including robbery and kidnapping.Lowe said, "I'm proud of the way he has come out of this - getting back to being the person that he is."The younger Lowe is expected to be sentenced later Tuesday.The 23-year-old Lowe also entered an Alford plea on Monday to a conspiracy to commit armed robbery charge stemming from a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Funding would aid in oyster research
A more than $6 million effort from state legislators to help restore the oyster population will positively affect Brunswick County if the governor signs the budget as it is.The state's budget this year calls for more than $4 million for an oyster shell research hatchery at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. About $2 million is slated for six new positions and more equipment, most of which will be allocated for the Morehead City office of the Division of Marine Fisheries, said Craig Hardy, chief of the research enhancement section of the division. The Morehead City office oversees oyster shell recycling in Brunswick County."This money is going to give us the ability to expand the horizon of the oyster shell sanctuaries," Hardy said.
