Six more events for FTOPS VIII
The incredibly busy online poker room hosted six FTOPS events over the span of three days and then announced a new $25,000 World Championship heads-up event. Scheduled to take place on Saturday May 24 the heads-up event will be hosted by none other than the 2008 NBC National Heads-Up poker champion, and Full Tilt pro, Chris Ferguson. Poker fans will get the chance to watch players like Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer and Phil Ivey battle it out for some gigantic bragging rights. In addition to the pros, online players will be able to buy-in directly for $25,000 or qualify for as little as $500+$35. Visit www.fulltiltpoker.com to learn more about the epic event. Meanwhile in FTOPS VIII action we had six more online online champs crowned. Here's a brief summary of each event: FTOPS VIII Event 2 $240+$16 PLO-Knockout FTOPS VIII Event 2 drew 1,070 players and was captained by the Italian Pirate himself - Max Pescatori. Unfortunately Pescatori, or any Full Tilt pro for that matter, did not make the money, which started at 108th place. Instead it was online player whothedonk who made the biggest cash by taking down 1st place for $48,150. Here's a look at the complete final table results for Event 2: 1. whothedonk$48,150 2. gregguiche $30,495 3. hasuling $22,577 4. The_Dean221 $17,655 5. toksnokas $13,375 6. Tilted-Tony $9,630 7. Double 0 KC $6,420 8. Enyogo $4,815 9. Pokerfan X $3,424 FTOPS VIII Event 3 No Limit Hold'em 3 x Shootout $500+$35 FTOPS VIII Event 3 was hosted by David "The Dragon" Pham, who has been setting the live tournament world on fire the past couple of years and has gone deep in a mind-boggling number of tournaments. Pham hasn't yet had as much success in online poker, however, and Event 3 did not change that. On the other hand fellow Full Tilt pro Erick Lindgren has numerous online cashes to his name and added another by coming in 46th in Event 3 for $1,530. Mike Matusow also cashed in the event coming in 70th for $1,020. Ultimately it was the awkwardly named BOP B 3AKOHE 1 who took down first place for a total of $76,545. Here's a look at the complete final table payouts for Event 3: 1. BOP B 3AKOHE 1 $76,545 2. Davidp18 $51,030 3. Bull1967 $36,450 4. BKiCe $27,337 5. rur11 $20,047 6. In the end it came down to EMSBas and StellarCards who battled in heads-up play for first place. EMSBas was the last man standing and took home $48,420 as the result. Jeff Madsen hosted but it was veteran player Berry Johnston who stole the show by coming in fourth place and cashing for $8,385. Not bad for a guy who had most of his WSOP bracelets before online poker even existed. Online player voguepergula placed first in the event and won $27,735. Here are the complete final table payouts for Event 5: 1. voguepergola $27,735 2. dman13 $19,092 3. nimbus $12,964 4. Berry Johnston $8,385 5. sillylife $5,289 6. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, the host didn't even get a taste of the money. Three Full Tilt pros did, however, as Scott Fischman came in 12th, Lee Watkinson 33rd and recent WPT World Champion David Chiu placed 43rd. Online player mmmadd took first place for $68,477. Alexander the Great: Jung Won a Tidy Sum
The PartyPoker.com Million events are an annual live tourney hosted by Party aboard world class luxury cruise ships. Of the 171 total players who didn't qualify online through the site bought their way into the NL Hold'em Freeze-out event for $8,000. The majority of the entrants for the PPM VI were European, including a whopping 20% from Germany along. As a result it wasn't a shock to see only one non-European make the final table: Final Table Positions and Payouts: Position Player Country Prize 1 Alexander Jung Germany $358,280 2 Dominik Stopka Germany $285,583 3 Cory Albertson USA $159,235 4 Mika Paasonen Finland $119,425 5 Raymond Estall UK $92,883 6 Andreas Jorbeck Sweden $67,675 7 Johannes Strassman Germany $47,770 8 Peter Steinlesberger Austria $31,845 9 Kenneth Gregersen Denmark $21,230 Heads up between the final two was short and one-sided. Jung, after taking down a number of pots uncontested, got it all in with J-7against Stopka's A-9. The flop paired Jung's 7 and it held for the win. "This is my biggest live win so far. The structure of the tournament was perfect for me, and there were some very good players here. I had a lot of respect for Dominik. I had seen him play a great many hands, mostly without a showdown - and when he did have to show it was often something like aces - so he is a good player. However, I felt one or two others were a bit tight on the final table - perhaps wanting to try and climb the money positions." The winner's glass trophy was presented to the University mathematics student by Party Poker's "Ambassador of poker" Mike Sexton along with his first place prize. Look out for Jung at this summer's WSOP in Las Vegas, as he plans to use part of his newly earned bankroll to take a swing at the world's most prestigious poker tournament. ZeeJustin dishes on WSOP, Internet play
PokerListings spoke with Bonomo by phone this week about making the switch from online to live tournaments, the WSOP, and the best young players we'll be seeing this year. Making the transition Bonomo says that the transition to the live game from online has been an easy one. "It's the same game," he says. "I think online is a much better teaching tool in terms of the fundamentals and math, because you see so many more hands per hour. You have a larger sample size and you just learn so much quicker. "There is also the psychological side of playing live, things like tells and not getting nervous. For me, I've been playing competitive Magic since I was 12 or 13, so a lot of my skills carry over from that." But do all successful online players find the shift to live poker, the slower cousin of the online game, as effortless as Bonomo has? "I think any of the most successful online players will find it just as easy, especially cash-game players," he says. "Some tournament players might run into problems just because they're used to playing with shorter stack sizes, and that situation doesn't come up as much live." "Basically, anyone that plays a variety of games online and especially cash games will transfer over really well." Who's next? The last three years have seen the "youngest bracelet winner" mantle change hands annually, with Eric Froehlich, Jeff Madsen, and Bonomo's 2007 WSOP housemate Steve "MrSmokey1" Billirakis all taking their turns at the top. Billirakis' record might not be broken this year, given that he was only 21 years and 11 days old at the time of his win, but Bonomo says he wouldn't be surprised to see a few new players sporting some bling.#img: tom-dwan_19727.jpg: left: Rising stars include Tom "durrrr" Dwan.# "As far as 21-year-olds go, I think Tom "durrrr" Dwan has a really good shot at winning a bracelet. He's a very strong player and he knows more than just Hold'em. "David Benefield has also had some success on the tournament circuit, and he's due for a big win," says Bonomo. Toward the end of the year, Bonomo says, there's one more player everyone should keep their eyes on. "Another guy who was living at our house (at last year's WSOP) who I have to predict a lot of success [for] is Ozzy 87," he says. "He won't actually be 21 until October, though, so he won't be playing at the WSOP." Speaking of the WSOP… "I don't think anyone's strong enough to say they're a favorite to win a bracelet, but I think I'm up there in terms of most likely players to win one," Bonomo says of this year's WSOP. "That's [by] far and away my No. 1 goal." The path to that goal begins with playing 25 events, requiring a high level of dedication. So how does Bonomo plan to maximize his bracelet EV? "One thing for me is that I play terribly if I get no sleep, so that's No. 1 for me, to try to get eight hours a night if possible," he says. "Eating healthy helps me maintain focus. Just trying to be happy - not having major life problems to focus on makes playing poker so much easier." As far as the actual game itself is concerned, Bonomo says the cornerstone of his WSOP efforts will be constant analysis of his plays. "I'm very big on analyzing every single play, both when I'm at the table and when I'm done playing. "I just want to make sure that if I'm making mistakes that I'm learning from every single one of them, and that I won't commit them in the future. That way I'm always learning and improving my game." Bonomo hopes his new status as a Bodog Poker-sponsored pro will lead some of his opponents to making mistakes of their own. "There's always the 'bust a pro' factor," he says. "That's one of the reasons Phil Hellmuth has a lot of success, because people see him on TV and just want to bust him. So I'm hoping I'll get some of that." He says he's already experienced that to some degree at Bodog's Justin Bonomo cash table, where his status works to his advantage. "Whenever I play there, there's always people just going out of their way, throwing money at me and trying to take all my chips." Besides the spending money from overzealous online opponents, there's one other big advantage his new sponsor gives Bonomo this summer. "Team Bodog is superaccommodating to anything I need - whatever I need I just call them," he concludes. "They treat me like a superstar. I love the experience of being on the team so far."Visit PokerListings.com
