Goldman Sachs headlines losers among financials at open
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Goldman Sachs led financial sector decliners early Tuesday as a rash of bad news hammered the industry. Shares of Goldman lost 3.7%, hit by a downgrade and earnings cut from two research firms before the bell. Shares of Wachovia Corp. and Morgan Stanley fell over 3% on continuing troubles in the auction-rate securities front. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. fell 2.5% as the bank said it would book a $1.5 billion write-off on mortgage-backed securities and loans. Poor results from UBS out of Europe also did little to lift the overall gloom in the sector. The Financial Select Sector SPDR , an ETF that tracks financials in the S&P 500, lost 1.6%, as did the Amex Securities Broker/Dealer Index which lost 0.8% in early action too.
