Dear Mr. Berlins,
I actually refer to your second item in this morning's Guardian, 'the composer Mozart' and the World Service. I lived for a while in Kenya at a time when a rather heavy-handed government kept the press & broadcasters on a very tight rein & many people relied very heavily on the wild service for honest reporting. They came from all walks of life: Nairobi computer wizards, those from the slums of Kawangware, and hunter gatherers out in the bush. At the time Kenya had a population of about 24,000,000, of whom perhaps 2,000,000 had heard of Mozart & knew he was a Western composer. If you multiply that by similar proportions among the populations of Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Mozambique, India, Vietnam...it might help you to keep a sense of proportion when discussing the problems of the world outside London.
I fully agreed with your comments about pseudonyms, by the way, but I was compelled by whoever designed this silly system to register the silly name attached to this: only alphanumerical symbols (what are these people doing to our language?), without spaces, are allowed: plain Trevor Walshaw just will not do: before you write your next column, have a word with the editor.
Yours sincerely, Trevor Walshaw, Meltham. comment on Marcel Berlins: The web encourages lies and deceit. It's impossible to know who lurks behind a funny nickname Sep 24, 2008 7:33 PM [GMT]
